Founder and Affiliate Activities

September 2008 - CIPA founder Dolores Hanna has been inducted into the IP Hall of Fame 2008. The Academy cites Ms. Hanna as "the first female president of the International Trademark Association and a highly influential figure in the development of trademark law and practice across the world."

Ms. Hanna provided the inspiration for the Chicago Intellectual Property Alliance and has worked tirelessly to promote its programs and activities.

The formal induction will be held in Chicago on 22 June 2009. It is part of the IP Business Congress™ Annual Event for Global IP Leaders. The meeting program has been posted at the Congress website, www.ipbusinesscongress.com.

Dolores Hanna and Anne Chasser, the former Commissioner of the U.S. Trademark Office at the CIPA conference announcing the TMO rules concerning the Madrid Protocol in Chicago, 2003.  Ms. Hanna chaired the program and Commissioner Chasser was the keynote speaker.  The program led a series of programs across the United States that publicized the new rules. 

2008 - CIPA President-Elect, Mike Harlin, McAndrews Held & Malloy, has been named one of the "40 Under 40" attorneys in Illinois.

2008 - Jeff Handelman, Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, won the prestigious Burton award for a law firm compendium. His two-volume treatise is Guide to TTAB Practice published by Aspen Publishers. It provides analysis of the procedural and substantive issues that arise in trademark cases, with particular emphasis on TTAB proceedings.

Whois Briefing: Update on ICANN's Whois initiatives, their negative impact on brand owners, and how to make your voice heard, presented by Whois Subcommittee of the International Trademark Association's Internet Committee.

The Whois domain name database presently contains each registrant's identification and contact information as well as contact information for each domain name's administrative and technical contacts. This information is readily available to any Internet user and is routinely relied upon for enforcing intellectual property rights, verifying important business information, and identifying the origin of illegitimate activities, such as phishing schemes and spam.

Whois information is on the verge of being stripped down to little more than a bare technical contact who will have no legally enforceable obligation to pass on correspondence to the registrant, and who is unlikely to be of assistance in effectively protecting and enforcing rights involving online matters. Last year, the Whois Task Force of ICANN (the body charged with setting Internet policy) unfortunately began taking steps toward significantly limiting the information available through the Whois domain name database.

During the INTA Annual Meeting, INTA's Whois Subcommittee will provide an update on this process and will explain how brand owners can make a difference.

The International and US Trademark Committees of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC) will present the seminar, “Trademarks: What’s Hot in 2007.” The seminar will be held on April 25, 2007, from noon to 4 pm at the CBA Building (321 S.
